Description
Making a lengthy tour through Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) had been a dream of Mark Imsdahl's from an early age. So when the opportunity to take it finally appeared on his horizon, he began the journey towards it by searching for a partner. That path led him to one of his least likely candidates… 12 year old daughter Mary. Teaming together, they spent nearly a year planning and preparing for the adventure. For her part, Mary, a fan of the International Wolf Center, decided to tie a "paddle-a-thon" into the trip to help fund its Outreach Educator Program. While Mary immersed herself into fund raising activities, Mark delved into practical matters involving the route, gear, and food. After months of anticipation, the day of departure finally arrived and off they paddled. Their route covered the entire distance across the 1.2 million acre BWCAW's jagged northern edge along the US-Canadian border. Traveling through the domain of one of North America's largest concentrations of wolves, Mark and Mary traversed the same lakes, rivers, streams and portages used by the famous French Voyageurs, whose exploits were responsible for opening much of the interior North American continent to exploration and trade. True adventurers, they blazed the trails both literally and figuratively, in the process inspiring many such as Mark and Mary to follow in their wakes and footsteps.
Mark and Mary's journals are both used to provide a day by day account of activities, thoughts, and feelings about their journey together. As one with a lifetime interest in the border region of northern Minnesota, Mark provides background of its history and geology, and draws on a range of personal and learned experiences that run the gamut from amusing to tragic. Mary adds a fresh and surprisingly insightful view of the voyage through the eyes of a child. Most importantly, through all of the small and large trials and tribulations which the journey had in store for them, they continued to forge on, reveling in the challenges, and savoring the thrills and successes. Through it all, character, mutual respect, and the father daughter bond continued to grow and flourish.
